The team was founded in 2001 as the Lexington Legends, a member of the South Atlantic League (SAL). The Legends won the SAL championship in their inaugural season, and they made the playoffs in each of their first four seasons. In 2023, the Legends were rebranded as the Lexington Counter Clocks. The name is a reference to Kentucky's history of racing horses counterclockwise.
